Deep Tissue Massage is designed to return the body to a state of ease and balance by eliminating uneven pulls on the skeleton, caused by contracted muscles and constricted fascia.

With Deep Tissue, muscle groups are freed in layers, from superficial to deep, to allow each individual muscle to perform its action without restriction. An improvement of range of motion, flexibility, mobility, and posture can be experienced after 1 massage or a series of sessions, depending on the severity and condition of the muscles.

This style of bodywork is usually on a specific area of pain and restriction, not full body. The therapist can choose a variety of methods using elbows, knuckles, thumbs, and forearms to get the desired pressure, precision, and outcome.

Note that "deep tissue therapy" does not always mean deep pressure, nor must it be painful to receive.
